So my parents are retired (they live in India) and they need to submit a Jeevanpramaan / DLC (Digital Life Certificate) every year to the bank or the pension organization (EPFO). Till last year, they had to go to the JeevanPramaan office and stand in a queue which is not just difficult and painful for senior citizens but also risky considering we are in the middle of a Covid Pandemic.
Fortunately, now you can go to a CSC center and submit it online (and a new service has started where a post man could do that for a small amount). However, there is also a way to do it from home which makes it very easy, safe, and fast but it does require a hardware fingerprint / IRIS scanner to capture biometrics. This is where the challenge starts. These devices are not that cheap and the range is limited (Jeevanpraman Android app / Windows Software supports limited hardware drivers).
Step 1: Download the JeevanPramaanInstallerW installer file from the website (not easy to do this though). You have to enter your email, a captcha (favorite method of GOI to make things secure/difficult), and then it emails you a link. However, when I clicked on the link, it said that the token had expired. Repeated it a few times until I found out that if an existing JeevanPramaan app is opened, you need to close that and then click on the link.
Step 2: The SW will not work until you have the device. Below is a pic of the device model numbers and links from where drivers can be installed. This is also available in the package file which is downloaded (from step 1)
Step 3: I tried to find these devices on Amazon. They are available but are relatively expensive (2.5k INR). I got this device from a colleague who had got it for a project. Hopefully this list will include more (and cheaper models) in the future but i think this will be a problem wrt adoption.
Step 4: Once the driver is installed, the next steps are easy and intuitive.
If your parents are living outside of India, i found this article to be helpful:
