How to get a JeevanPraman certificate online in Covid times

So my parents are retired (they live in India) and they need to submit a Jeevanpramaan / DLC (Digital Life Certificate) every year to the bank or the pension organization (EPFO). Till last year, they had to go to the JeevanPramaan office and stand in a queue which is not just difficult and painful for senior citizens but also risky considering we are in the middle of a Covid Pandemic.

Fortunately, now you can go to a CSC center and submit it online (and a new service has started where a post man could do that for a small amount). However, there is also a way to do it from home which makes it very easy, safe, and fast but it does require a hardware fingerprint / IRIS scanner to capture biometrics. This is where the challenge starts. These devices are not that cheap and the range is limited (Jeevanpraman Android app / Windows Software supports limited hardware drivers).

Step 1: Download the JeevanPramaanInstallerW installer file from the website (not easy to do this though). You have to enter your email, a captcha (favorite method of GOI to make things secure/difficult), and then it emails you a link. However, when I clicked on the link, it said that the token had expired. Repeated it a few times until I found out that if an existing JeevanPramaan app is opened, you need to close that and then click on the link.

Step 2: The SW will not work until you have the device. Below is a pic of the device model numbers and links from where drivers can be installed. This is also available in the package file which is downloaded (from step 1)

Step 3: I tried to find these devices on Amazon. They are available but are relatively expensive (2.5k INR). I got this device from a colleague who had got it for a project. Hopefully this list will include more (and cheaper models) in the future but i think this will be a problem wrt adoption.

Step 4: Once the driver is installed, the next steps are easy and intuitive.

If your parents are living outside of India, i found this article to be helpful:

Central Banks and Money Supply

How Central Banks control the money supply? The central bank determines the reserve ratio for banks in a country. smaller banks keep part of the deposit as reserves and use the remaining deposit as loans. Banks earn a profit on these loans. The money supply is of the following types. M1: Currency, checkable deposits at bank, and traveler's checks. M2: M1 + Savings and time deposits M3: M2+Long term time deposits, CD's.  In the US, the Feds buy US government bonds which are their asset. The federal reserve notes in circulation and deposits (M2) are on the Fed's liabilities. Open Market Operations: One way to influence the money supply is by increasing the money base (assuming keeping the reserve ratio the same). The central bank does this by buying more government bonds on the open market (aka OMO - Open Market Operations). When they buy bonds, the money is deposited in the bank accounts of the sellers. Banks will have money to give part out as loans. The money multip...

How to move files to desktop screen on Android phone

Have you ever struggled to move a file like a song or a pdf file to the main screen of your Android phone (like a song you listen to quite often or a boarding pass) ? There's no easy way to do it in the Android system itself. ES explorer provided a way to do it until that app was blocked on Google play store. After a bit of a struggle, I found a way to do it and sharing so that it could help some of you.  Step 1: Install 'File Widget' from play store. After it's installed, there's not much you can do on the app.  Step 2: Open widgets (the way to do it differs from phone to phone but usually do a long press on the  home screen and select widgets.  Step 3: select File Widget and then locate the file you want to move to the desktop and press ok... It will create a shortcut to the file on your desktop.  Enjoy!
